At the end of May, four communities in California launched 100-Day Challenges as part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s 100-Day Challenge Initiative for California Cities & Counties to Fight Homelessness - with a cohort focus of permanently housing people, mainly seniors, exiting Project Roomkey.
Moving to Virtual 100-Day Challenges

These communities came together at a virtual Launch Workshop to meet as a team for the first time, set their unreasonably ambitious goals, and begin to develop the work plans to achieve them. The communities and their goals were:

Alameda County - In 100 days, 400 people across Alameda County will exit Project Roomkey into safe and stable housing.

Los Angeles - In 100 days, we will utilize shared housing to house 100 people age 55 or older and have an acuity score of 0-7 (without precluding people with higher scores).  We will leverage the learning to house an additional 300 PRK clients by the end of PRK demobilization.

Riverside County - In 100 Days, 140 seniors, 65 years and older, who are currently participating in PRK, will be in safe and stable permanent housing.

Stanislaus County - In 100 days, 100 Individuals experiencing homelessness that are 65 and older and/or individuals experiencing homelessness with underlying medical conditions will successfully exit Project Roomkey into safe and stable housing which can include Permanent Supportive Housing and landlord engaged units with a focus on veterans, individuals dealing with severe mental illness and/or substance use disorder, and individuals with disabilities

In a very uncertain and rapidly evolving time, the communities immediately began to collaborate, innovate, and execute towards achieving these goals in just 100 days.

On September 2 and 3, these communities came back together for the Sustainability Workshop, where they shared their results and learning, and to make plans to ensure that the momentum from the 100-Day Challenge would be sustained moving forward. Across the entire Cohort, 292 people exited Project Roomkey into safe and stable permanent housing in 100 days!

Their individual community results were::

Alameda County - 51 individuals exited Project Roomkey into safe and stable housing

Los Angeles - 109 individuals, aged 55 or older exited Project Roomkey into safe and stable housing

Riverside County - 58 seniors, ages 65+, exited Project Roomkey into safe and stable housing

Stanislaus County - 28 seniors, ages 65+ exited Project Roomkey into safe and stable housing

The teams are excited to take their learning, insights, new relationships, and new ways of working into the future to continue to help Project Roomkey clients exit into safe and stable housing. The teams will also be taking part in a Sustaining Project, where they will be working closely with System Leaders to continue strengthening their system as a whole.

We are so proud of all of their hard work and accomplishments, and we can’t wait to see what they continue to achieve! Be sure to keep an eye out for announcements regarding future cohorts as part of this initiative.
